What is an AI consultant?

An AI consultant is a senior adviser who finds operational bottlenecks, recommends practical AI work, and keeps a 12-month plan on track. They are not a chatbot vendor and they are not a one-off software sale.

In short

AI consultancy is advisory work. The consultant audits how a business currently answers calls, follows up leads, books appointments and moves work between tools. They then propose a sequenced plan. Build work, if needed, is scoped separately so the retainer stays focused on strategy rather than becoming an open-ended development contract.

What an AI consultant actually does

The job is to separate useful automation from hype. That usually means mapping current processes, naming the inefficiencies that cost time or lost enquiries, and ranking work by impact and effort.

A useful consultant also says what not to buy. Many businesses already have a CRM, phone system and calendar. The first question is how those tools should talk to each other, not which new platform to install.

They stay after the workshop. A plan that is not reviewed each quarter is a PDF. Support days exist so the backlog still matches the business when a tool changes or a department hires.

How New Era AI structures the work

New Era AI uses four named stages: Discover, Roadmap, Support and Execute. Discover is an operations audit. Roadmap is a 12-month plan prioritised by impact. Support is ongoing consulting days each quarter so the plan does not stall. Execute is implementation, quoted separately when a clear win is ready to build.

Packages are priced by consulting days per quarter, from AI Pulse to AI Partner, on the packages page. Pulse is one day a quarter. Partner is six. You can move up a tier; you do not have to guess a custom day rate in a sales call.

Worked example: a trade business that thinks it needs a chatbot

A heating firm asks for a website chatbot because a competitor has one. Discover finds that almost every lost job started as a missed mobile call after 5pm, not as a website visitor who wanted to type.

The roadmap therefore puts a voice agent and a calendar join in quarter one, and parks the chatbot. Execute is quoted for that voice job only. Support in quarter two checks whether morning callbacks are actually happening. That is consulting: the first request was not the first job.

When you need a consultant rather than a product trial

A product trial is useful when you already know the job: for example answering inbound calls with Echo One. A consultant is useful when the problem is unclear, several departments are involved, or previous tools were bought and never used.

If two directors want two different platforms, the consultant’s output is a single backlog with owners, not a demo that expires. If the only question is “can this number be answered when we are on site?”, you may be ready to evaluate Echo One without a long strategy arc. Plenty of clients do both: a Pulse retainer and a product, in that order.

What the consultant is not

They are not a substitute for a regulated adviser, a solicitor, or an accountant. They are not a guarantee that a model never errs. They are not a vendor whose commission depends on one SKU.

New Era AI also operates Echo One, Nexus One and Appointment Engine. That is disclosed on the product pages. Strategy is still allowed to conclude that you should not buy them this year.

When this matters

This is relevant to New Era AI’s consulting retainers and to AI strategy work. Product pages such as Echo One and Nexus One remain the place to evaluate specific platforms once the roadmap says they fit.

Questions

Is an AI consultant the same as an AI developer?

No. Consulting is advisory: audit, roadmap and quarterly support. Implementation projects are scoped and quoted separately under Execute.

Do we need technical staff first?

No. New Era AI builds, integrates and maintains the systems it deploys, and trains the people who will use them.

Where does New Era AI work from?

The company is based in Llanelli, West Wales, and works with businesses across Wales and the wider UK, remotely or on-site.

Can a consultant tell us not to buy AI this quarter?

Yes. A ranked backlog includes what to leave. That is part of the job.

Start with the free AI Opportunity Assessment.

A short, no-obligation conversation about where enquiries, hours and revenue leak today. You do not have to pick a tier to have it, and what comes out of it feeds Discover, so the first paid day starts from evidence rather than a blank sheet.
