Jimmy is our Unitree R1 Air: the face of New Era AI at events, shoots and social. Behind the scenes we are building R1 Assistant, a custom app that gives him a local LLM brain, voice, vision and gestures.

What Jimmy can do.
Hardware presence plus a growing software stack: local models, voice, vision and gestures.
Local LLM brain
Jimmy runs through Ollama on a local model stack, so his chat brain stays private and on device instead of a public cloud API.
Voice in and out
Speech to text and text to speech with hold to talk, optional wake word, and live mic and speaker level checks in R1 Assistant.
Vision and walk up greeting
Camera feed from the robot plus face detection so Jimmy can notice people nearby and greet them as they walk up.
Gestures and presence
Physical gesture controls in the app so Jimmy can move and express himself while he talks, not just stand still on camera.
Knowledge base
Documents load into a local knowledge base with chunked lexical retrieval, so answers can draw on New Era AI material you attach.
Personality modes
Session settings include personality options (including Unhinged mode) so Jimmy can match the energy of a shoot, event or demo.
What we are building
R1 Assistant: Jimmy's custom brain.
R1 Assistant is New Era AI's custom desktop app for Jimmy. It connects the Unitree SDK, audio, camera and a local Ollama model so the team can talk to him, watch latency per turn, and keep improving his brain without sending every conversation to the cloud.
Unitree SDK connection
Connect and disconnect the robot from one control panel, with startup checks for SDK readiness and network reachability.
Ollama chat models
Swap local chat models (for example Gemma and Llama builds) and verify the Ollama server before a session.
Full voice loop
Capture, speech to text, LLM reply, text to speech and playback, with per stage latency so we can tune how natural Jimmy feels.
Camera and transcript UI
Live robot camera beside You said / Jimmy replied transcripts, plus type to Jimmy when voice is not the right tool.
